Take Two

Motif 12 is trickier than it looks. The one on the left is my first attempt. I blocked it into submission, but the centre is way overcrowded. Take two on the right is not perfect, but a lot better.

A word on the thread I'm using: in November last year, I dyed a lot of small skeins, trying to get the right colour for a pair of earrings, as you can read here. I was trying out different proportions of the same dyes, so the resulting colours are related and go well together. They work well for these small, multicolour motifs, I  think.

  1. Wow some how I missed your dye work and you have a great taste for colors :) I love that book but it would have been nice to have picot size mentioned although, I made a doily with one motif, the odd thing is that I did use 2 different size picots when experimenting around and they both looked nice :)

  2. I get so frustrated when I have to block a piece into submission. What changes, if any, did you make to have the second motif look better? I love the colors!

  3. I can see the second one is better, what did you change? The colors do go well together!

  4. What I did was make the picots on the central ring very much smaller. The funny thing is, the photo in the book shows them as quite long. Carollyn is right, the book should give more indication of the size of picots because that's crucial to whether these motifs lie flat.

    1. You know maybe we should write that directly in the book for our own piece of mind :)

  5. Love your colour & picot play :-)
I would simply say that the 1st one has 'spiral' picots - they create a spiraling effect, don't they

    1. They do. So the motif is not a write off, just not correct.

  6. The first one doesn't look bad. It just isn't what you were aiming for. I do like your second effort better--including the change of color for the central ring. The tatter of the one in the book must have used really long picots to join those outer rings of the ring only round to make it work.

  7. Nicely tatted, Jane. You are right; this one is not an easy tat. However, I've done it a lot as it is so satisfying and pretty.

  8. I'm glad you found a use for you dyed thread. I hope you can still use the mis-tatted motifs.

  10. This is lovely, may be the first wheel is not easy as it was also for me in the (aunt) Priscilla edging :-) but second, third and next are very pretty!
