A friend of mine found this tatted doily when she was clearing out her mum's things. She has no idea where it came from or how old it is. She asked me to sort it out. To be honest, it's not the kind of job I enjoy. I shoved it to the bottom of my tatting bag and ignored it. Which was naughty of me.
I think the outer two rounds will have to be cut off and the rest blocked. And then? Should I tat a couple of replacement rounds? In a different colour perhaps? Or leave it as a small doily?
Sadly Jane, I think the amount of work needed to put this doily to rights is excessive. It seems that some of the inner joins have come adrift as well as the outer joins. I would prefer to tat a new doily.
ReplyDeleteThanks, yes, that's why I've been ignoring it. But she wants it as a momento of her mum. So the best solution might be to just cut off and leave it at that? Someone has already had a go at repairing it.
DeleteWhat about blocking it back into as much shape as possible, then stiffening it with 50/50 glue to hold it in place, and then framing it???
ReplyDeleteOk, this is probably not orthodox, but to restore an heirloom with little alteration, maybe reattach the broken picots with sewing thread?
ReplyDeleteI would leave as is and use it to make one of those lacy journal covers with other lace and pretty buttons and little findings and a key and picture frame!
ReplyDeleteI know whatever you do it will be a wonderful gift to her. Sounds like all the other suggestions are good ones so I will let you figure out what works best for you. ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone. I’m going to give these suggestions to Carien and let her decide.
ReplyDeleteI think I’d be totally honest with her and tell her it’s beyond repair. Shame but she doesn’t even know if her mum did it so not really of much sentimental value.
ReplyDeleteHaving recently discovered some of my own “shoved away” work, I order if mom didn’t do this herself when she realized things weren’t working? Definitely cut off those outer two rounds. I would pin it out as evenly as possible and then decide what to do. Many wonderful suggestions!
ReplyDeleteExciting to see how you fixed it. Waiting for the outcome.
