Masks Again

I've undertaken to make 50 masks. It seemed a rational undertaking at the time; in the cold light of day, not so much! I made ten yesterday, but that's not sustainable. I plan to make another ten today and then aim for five a day.

I'm using the pattern from Craft Passion that I used before. I was given two curtains to use :

To begin with, I was throwing away my scraps promptly, in the interests of keeping things tidy. But this morning I realised that the ladies who make rag rugs should be able to use them. You can see from the picture below that they utilise very small pieces:

I have today's 10 cut out, I had better start sewing:

  1. Good for you! That looks like a great way to use up scraps. There are days when I feel like I should be making more masks. I do have some cut out, but I just haven't been in the mood to make them.

  2. Like the colour of the masks. I made some masks in May and June but only managed a dozen for immediate family and friends. However, with more need to wear them at so many places they are going to be around for some time. Always difficult to know what to keep after cutting out, like you I go for trying to keep tidy!

  3. That’s a lot of work, Jane. I tried wearing a mask today and couldn’t breathe. Went almost into a panic attack and had to keep lifting it away from my face. It was really awful. I keep my shopping list on the phone and pay with it too. Big problem with that as it uses face recognition!!!! Off comes the mask so I can use the phone. I may have to resort to shopping online if I can’t overcome the panic.

    1. That would be really scary. We’ve had to wear masks for a while now and have got used to them. The cloth ones are easier to breathe through than the industrial one we tried.

  4. I dislike wearing masks myself. Or at least the skin on my face does! I end up washing my face before and after every trip outside the house. Several friends have made me masks including one with a musical theme. I must get tatting sewn on them also!

  5. We are all different.
When I made a bunch of masks (somewhere around 200), it was helpful to spend days cutting out, followed by days sewing/ironing, etc. I saved thread and time that way because I could sew multiple masks without cutting between them. Another big help was making a thin cardboard form to press around.
    Best of luck!

    1. I cut 10 and then sew 5 at a time so that I have something accomplished in reasonable time! I like your tip about a cardboard pattern, thanks. I thought yesterday that pinning is taking too much time.

  6. I'm like Linda - cut all, sew all. My MIL prefers to do in batches.
That rug reminds me of one we sisters started and finally Pa finished it after his retirement ;-P
