The Answer

After more head scratching and a couple more trials, I came up with a way to  construct my glasses case. Felt works much better than stiffener to reinforce it. The answer was to cut the felt 1 cm smaller than the finished fabric size all round, to create a sort of gusset. This made it much easier to manipulate the pieces. I also ditched the boning at the top that Corlie had suggested. It didn't really work to keep the case closed and made it very difficult to get a neat finish. Instead, I sewed on a button and worked a loop:
I made the lining shorter than the fabric, so that the fabric would fold down:
Don't tell anyone, but after all that, I realised that I had put the embroidery upside down!  There's no way I'm going to redo it, so it has to remain as an homage to imperfection.

  1. Well, it’s the loveliest homage to imperfection i’ve seen! Looks beautiful and practical as well!

  4. LOVE it but I don't see it as being upside down. I thought it was impossible to put that design upside down. If you don't like it like that then stand on your head when you want to look at it and the problem is solved!!!!

    1. The leaves point downwards when the opening is at the top. Not too critical, which is why I’m carrying on regardless!

  5. It’s unique to you, no one else would have thought of it or done it by mistake, and it looks beautiful to me so don’t worry no one will notice.

  6. It's pretty, I love it and can't see what you say about leaves, if there's a rule for leaves to go up or down, there are some plants that don't respect it. Up and down are conventions. The lining is perfect!

  8. I really like your case, who says leaves all grow in the same direction anyway :)
I've made only one glasses case so far, long ago, for my grand-mother. I used a flex frame I recycled from an old coin purse. I am soon going to need my own glasses and I've bought a couple of those frames in advance, because I remember she thought it was a convenient option. Just in case you decide to make another case, and like this idea, what I bought was the Prym flex frame (615176).
As for me I'm definitely going to borrow your idea of the felt, I think it's really the best way to go; thanks :)
