That Sinking Feeling

I've almost finished knitting the first sleeve of the pullover I was asked to finish. I got the hang of colour changes and shaping, but I began to wonder if there's enough yarn for the second sleeve. Yesterday I got out my scale to help me decide. First I weighed the second needle - 16g. Then I weighed the sleeve and took off 16 - 138-16=122g. Then I measured the yarn that's left - 92g. While the method isn't terribly accurate, it's clear that there isn't enough yarn to knit the second sleeve.

What to do, what to do? I could abandon the project; I could knit three-quarter length sleeves; or I could knit the sleeve all in white, as there's plenty of that. While option one is tempting, I'll probably go with three. Perhaps that's what the original knitter intended? I have no idea.

  1. My choice would be all white. It would be tough to abandon the project this far in, and if it's cool enough to wear a sweater, I prefer long sleeves. That said, it might be nice to have at least one 3/4 length sleeve sweater in my wardrobe.

  2. Good choice. Perhaps you can include the blues in the cuffs or as some scattered diamond motifs just to integrate the entire sweater? I had once used 3 colours in the border and cuffs of my pullover as if it was part of the pattern.

    1. I did think of doing a chevron on the sleeves to link to the back and front, but I’m quite fed up now, so will probably just use white.

    2. I can relate to that. Sleeves take as much time and yarn as knitting a sleeveless sweater.

  4. Oh no, this is the worst kind of problem. When you're not enjoying the project as it is and then you've got to get creative about it :(
