Anna Braids

Vandana Gupta asked me in a comment on this post to show more clearly the Anna Burda instructions for the leaf bread. In case the photo isn't clear enough, I'll rewrite the instructions for braid 6: This braid consists of r. of 4-4-8 ds. Draw r. tog. and reverse work. Commence 2nd and each foll. r. after a thread length of half the size of the r. (= 4 ds.), after 4th ds. join to base of antecedent r., end r. with 4-8 ds.

This article was in the May 1984 Anna Burda magazine.

I used split rings to tat the braid in a more 'modern' fashion, as you can see here.

  1. Wonderful patterns can be found in older magazines. I sure would like to see an Anna Burda magazine one day... time to go looking for one!

    1. I don't think they're published any more but you might find back issues. They always had a tatting issue in May.

  2. I took this magazine from 1973/4 until they finished publishing it in English, they do still publish the magazine but it's in German and can only be brought in Europe. Every holiday I spend sometime looking around newsagents for a copy, and only buy thise with tatting in, it's just a question of being on holiday at the time of publication
I am sure I have this page and will have a look later.

    1. Oh, that's very interesting, thanks. I didn't realise it was still published in German.

    2. I got my copy out and I'm looking at the pattern, thanks for making me get the page out I found something else on it which would make a hanky edging, I should get the pages out more often, I had to downsize my collection so I took out all the tatting and knitted lace patterns and anything else I use and put them in plastic sleeves to keep them safe. Unfortunately they won't sell the German issues in the uk, I have two trips booked into Europe this year so I will be looking for the Anna magazines.

    3. Their pages are definitely worth revisiting. One of my favourites of the old articles is the tablecloth with tatted flowers. Most of my Anna's are in storage. I should've done what you did. I hope you find more on your trips.

  3. Dear Jane
I apologise for a response that is a year too late
I hadn't been able to follow you ( and other net related stuff) for this period for some personal reasons
Thank you very much for taking the trouble of accepting my request, I appreciate sincerely what you have done.
Apologies once more and keep up the creative work!
