My Mistake

Eventually I worked out why my patchwork pieces didn't fit. The problem was not in my cutting but in my sewing. I used the 2 mm mark on my sewing machine foot as a guide to the width of the seams, whereas I should've used the 5 mm mark!

So every square and rectangle is 6 mm wider than it should be. Is there an emoticon for 'I am an idiot'?

Salvage job required. I removed the outer row that I had cut to new measurements because it made the piece too big for a tray cloth and didn't look right. Then I added a backing and did the binding as per the original instructions:
The purpose of this exercise was to learn, and learn I did. I also have an every day, 'don't worry if you spill tea on it' tray cloth in my kitchen.

  1. Well it looks very grand to me, I would definitely be upset if anyone spilled anything on it if it were my work! I can empathise, but from a distance - because I do not like sewing at all! It's good that you solved the problem - just in case you want to make another.

  2. Good job ! Always great if learning is accompanied by utility :-)
I do the same, too -- cut fabric with 5 mm sewing allowance and then go and join at half that - a perennial idiot ;-P

  3. A good finish, and a nice tray cloth.

  4. We learn every day but it's a big mistake anyone could make, the cloth looks good hope you can use it as it is and then make another one,

  6. Oh how frustrating but exciting that you were able to figure it out! Seems no matter how long we do something or how proficient we can still do things like this. Reassuring to know I'm not alone....

  7. If you are an idiot, then you are among friends! I have done that more times than I care to think about. I'm glad you were able to figure it out!
