You Win Some...

I was away when the craft competition I'd entered was held, so I had to wait until yesterday's craft group meeting to get my results in full. My poncho won the crochet section! So it will go forward to the national competition later in the year.  The hat came second in the beginner's machine sewing section. It was a bit cheeky of me to enter the beginner section, but technically I could do that because I'd never won a place for sewing - so I won't be able to enter it again. My cardigan didn't feature. Competition in the knitting section is fierce and apparently my finishing techniques were not up to scratch. The judges did give some very positive comments, but said the setting in of the sleeves needed attention and they thought my casting on was too loose. So there you go. I will get a little trophy for the poncho but haven't received it yet.

Here's a reminder of what the entries looked like:

At the meeting yesterday, we had a speaker to tell us about 'molecular gastronomy'. It was interesting, especially the idea that you can do some of techniques at home, but I don't think I'm going to be making basil pearls any time soon.

  5. I don't think I would ever win anything if I entered where you live :) it sound like lots of entries and the judging has to be over the top notch :) Your knitting is so perfect it is hard to believe and from scratch too. Well I give you 5 stars on all of them :) and best of show :)

  9. It's tough having others judge your work. I'm pleased that you won for the poncho. Your sweater would have earned first place with me!

  11. Congratulations on your winning for the poncho,
I am sure your work was all winning and should have been first but these judges have a hard job, but never mind you learn what they like or dislike.

  13. Back in the '90s I entered a 'big' country fair with a multi-colored cardigan/jacket, which has textured stitches and stockinette, as well as color, and was one of the most difficult items I ever knit. It took me seven hours just to hide the color threads! I wasn't unhappy with 2nd place; but I noticed that fisherman knits (Aran) seemed to be more highly prized, as the monetary award was higher. Fisherman knits were 'easy' for me to do, and sure enough, I won a 1st with that one the next year. It was a pullover (much easier for me than a cardigan) and not many threads to hide. I doubt that either one would have passed muster with your judges, though! They are a tough bunch!

Congrats on your poncho! And the sweater is beautifully done! Love the tatted 'hat pin'!
