Not So Easy

When I was knitting the giraffe socks, I thought that the giraffe would make a good motif on a baby blanket. Hmmm. Just as well I started with a swatch because I really hadn't taken into account that adjustments would be needed to change a chart for knitting in the round to knitting back and forth. It's possible, but a number of adjustments need to be made.

  2. I think the giraffes themselves look pretty good.
IMHO, the only thing you need to do in the smaller swatch is to add the border to the 4th side , centering the giraffe according to the size of square to want.
If you want 2 giraffes in one square, how about having them face each other ?
If you draw out the pattern on a grid paper, it will be very easy to make the adjustments, especially as you now have an idea of the number of stitches you need.

    1. Well, the swatches are just a means to an end, experiments to try out various things. The final product will be much more balanced! For instance, knitting in the round it is easy to knit just one row of a colour, but if you do that with back and forth knitting, the colour you want can be on the wrong side. One solution, as in the top swatch, is to knit 2 rows instead of one. Another, in the bottom swatch, is to knit one row and then cut the yarn. So I was just trying various things.

    2. Oh, I understand! I thought you were talking about other adjustments ;-P
I remember facing this dilemma with an octopus I'd designed for my niece. Imagine changing yarns with those tentacles ! Finally, I used a multiple of methods, including the 2 you mention, in my attempt to have as little yarn crossing over, and as little weaving in as possible.
Whatever you decide, it will be a great looking blanket :-)
Thinking of adding other animals as well ?

  4. It is poetic that knitting giraffes is turning out to be a stretch. Tee hee. I think they look great.
