Overcoming my glue phobia

I tatted these Christmas tree decorations a couple of years ago for a craft fair my cousin participated in. I thought I could put them on my market table on Saturday, but should stiffen them first. Jane Eborall gave clear instructions for stiffening tatting with a mixture of glue and water. I reread the instructions, and the comments that followed, and then bought some glue. I'm so hopeless with glue that I don't keep the stuff in the house! Last night I experimented. The heart is a bit too stiff, so today I made a more watery mixture. I'll have to wait until the motifs are dry before I can see how well I've done, but so far so good.

  1. I also have a glue phobia. Perhaps I'll become a little bolder some day... with encouragement, of course!

    1. So it's not just me? I must admit that this white glue is more forgiving than the tacky type, so feel encouraged!

  2. I think you'll be very pleased with the way these turn out! I have mentioned before that my glue-stiffened items have not discolored over the years, and they keep their shape. (I do have some tricks about the 3-D items, which I intend to discuss in my blog.) You'll get over your fear of glue! Through experience you'll know just the right mixture of water and glue to use. This is a nice assortment for your market table!

    1. I am pleased with the result. I first tried your way on cling film, then settled for Margaret's way in a little bowl, though I guess if I was doing just one or two I'd use Jane's way in my hand. I'd be interested to hear about treating 3-D items.
