Testing the theory

The instructions I read for an 'afterthought' heel said to do 3 or 4 rows after picking up the stitches either side of the waste thread, and then decrease as for the toe. I did that and tried the sock on. I thought the heel looked much too skimpy. So I undid it and knitted 16 rows before decreasing. I wonder if that was the right way to go? Certainly the revamped sock looks rather odd off the foot. The point is, it is easy to experiment with an 'afterthought' heel.

  1. Looking very nice! Lots of sole in that pair! : ))

Though I have not knit sicks in a few years, I recall that this kind of heel was very good for me, as I have a narrow and rather short heel.

There is a marvellous book called Folk Socks, By Nancy Bush that I used to use all the time - it has many different typed of heels detailed in the front of the book. You may already know about it, but if not, it is one of the books that I kept after all the others had been given away. (I found tatting!)

  2. I have heard of Nancy Bush, but don't have her book. I first read about sock knitting in Spin Off magazine. I saw the pictures and was instantly smitten. I used my children's 'pick-up-sticks', until my grandmother gave me her double-pointed needles. Now I'm reading about the Magic Loop, that's something else to learn.

  3. I used that method for a couple of years but missed my little wooden dp’s! I did not enjoy the Magic Loop as much - too streamlined and not as zen-like or something for me, but it is a crazy-brilliant technique - well worth learning! And very simple, once you see the sequence.

    1. I love my dp needles too, but I keep seeing references to the magic loop, so I must give it a go!

  4. Hi Jane,
Many teachers tell you to use a 100 cm needle but I found that the 80 cm was perfect for the ML so I advised my student s to use that one. Just a thought. : ) Fox

    1. Thanks Fox. I am using 80cm needles, the instructions I'm following say 80cm for socks and 100cm for hats. I need all the tips I can get!!
